MATCH DAY 1

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (ABAS) - PROFESIONALS (PROF)  1-2

Match day one was intense as expected with both teams coming to the party. ABAS  took on PROF. looking to secure three points. To their dismay PROF. proved to be a better side than last year, handing ABAS their first defeat of the season.

BANKING AND FINANCE (BAFSA) - BUSINESS ADMINSTRATION (ABAS) 3-1

In the second game ABAS took on BAFSA and made up for the points they lost by hammering their opponents by three goals to one. For ABAS it’s just an indication they mean business and are in for the cup.

MATCH DAY 2

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (ABAS) – MARKETING (BAMSA) 1-1

Match day two produced fewer goals but the stacks were high as no team came drop points. ABAS played BAMSA in the first game the game ended a draw with both teams sharing the spoils. However the result favored ABAS as it takes them to four points.

MATCH DAY 3

PROFESSIONALS (PROF.) – INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (INFO) . 0-1

In the first game PROF  played INFO , with the aim of going on top of the league but Info had other plans as the began their campaign with what some fans call a ‘one goal project’. PROF were handed their first defeat but promise to bounce back hard in the next game.

For the men from Info it a big boost as they tasted victory in their opening game.

BANKING AND FINANCE (BAFSA) – MARKETING (BAMSA) 2-1

Match day 3 second game was played between BAFSA AND BAMSA which undoubtedly lived up to expectation and produced goals. At the end of the day BAFSA took all three points and handed BAMSA their first defeat of the tournament.

For the bankers they made up for the points they dropped in match day 1 and will be looking to push on from there.

MINI GUSA GAMES REPORT

The MINI GUSA GAMES is a miniature of the main GUSA competition and is held every year. The competition is a platform for Universities in Ghana to show chases their athlete capabilities aside studies. This year the event will also serve as a platform for the athletes to be selected to represent the country at the World University Championships in Seoul – South Korea in June this year.

The just ended Mini GUSA GAMES hosted at Kumasi was a success with five Universities representing at the games. Defending champions University Of Ghana  got off to a slow start after when their men’s football team struggled to beat UPSA (University Of  Professional Studies) in their first game , a one all draw resulted in a penalty shootout ending 4-2 in their favor , indeed it was a sign that things weren’t going to be easy for the defending champions.  This year five schools instead of the usual seven participated in the games, the University of Mines and Technology (UMAT) and University of Development Studies (UDS) failed to honor their slots due to various factors.

In the Men’s football category although UPSA failed to clench Bronze after their hopes were dashed away when the game between UG (University Of Ghana ) and KNUST (Kwame Nkrumah University Of Science And Technology), ending in UG favor and subsequently winning them bronze.  For the female team their performance was nothing to write home about after their poor performance, which has often been the case due to lack of competition and training.

TRACK EVENTS

                                                         200 METERS HEAT

In the track events UPSA recorded their first medal from the women’s department, as Andoh Helina came in third in the 1500M women’s final, with a record time of 5:27:88seconds.  A true talent she is and will definitely be one to watch come the Main GUSA games.

FIELD EVENTS

The teams second medal came in the field event surprisingly also from the women’s department. In the Discuss Women’s final Female Athlete Adjong Mary recorded 16.55m to secure Bronze. Mary is a level 300 student offering Banking and Finance and would also be a great prospect come the Main GUSA games.

Assistant Director of  Sports , Mr Turkson gave his remarks about the competition, in his statement , he said, " I believe the organization of the games was great and all participating teams were also well organized". 

  Speaking to Blow Your Horn Sports, Mr Turkson stated that the recent performance by the team was an improvement from their previous campaign. He also shed light on the performance of the ladies and furthur stated the team will definitely be Dark Horses in the Main Event.

TENNIS AN UNDERMINED SPORT IN GHANA

I love sports no thought about that, I am also crazy about football, Yes ! its true. But some how Ghanaian's as it may be have neglected an interesting sport such as Tennis. During my leisure days on campus I watched the youthful adults play in the sun, at dawn an even at night training regularly, but not as a sport to earn a living from but just for exercise. I watch them play most of the time and come to thing of it we are probably wasting talent.

Its not the case of using Tennis for exercise, but how we as Ghanaian's are able to harness Tennis potentials just as we do in football. I am well aware of the various Tennis clubs in the country training youngsters and even the integration of Tennis in the University Games (GUSA) but after these competitions take place there isn’t any event to keep them very active in the game. This obviously does not help to unearth more talents in the country.

I am well aware of the Ghana Tennis Association activities and truly commend them on getting Ghana back into the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and insisting that players who would like to compete for the country must play in the quarterly ranking to serve as a boost onto the international scene.  

Just last year December  the likes of George Darko  and Pascal Ziyab ( ranked No.2 in Ghana)   but to mention a few got Ghana back on track in the ITF Mens Pro Circuit Futures and further  went onto get Ghana back on the ATP Ranking.   Also Wheelchair tennis has been introduced by the Ghana Tennis Association to also give the disabled the opportunity to compete. Through that the Para Olympic festival was held last year to keep these athletes active, which is quite good in terms of progress.

With all these aids and events be organized by the GTF you would think that the current crop of tennis players in the country would have improved upon their performances in international competitions. But try to put yourself in their shoes and you will realize the needed support from government to push 

these players is not there. If only the needed attention giving to football could  somehow be shared across other sports like tennis , then our tennis players will truly have a chance to prove their worth to the world.

Even though many pundits and tennis players have complained about not earning enough and still incurring a lot of expenses on the international scene due to their travels from one tournament to another, both in the seniors and juniors.  We  simply cannot neglect the fact that it serves as a  chance for the government to pull foreigners into the country. Tennis has proved time and time again of being able to draw huge crowds from all over the world just to watch their favorite players or retired sports celebrities who have graced the court with their extra-ordinary talents. It also gives local players to engage these greats and learn from their idols personally. It will also undoubtedly draw many sponsors to the game and investors as well who would probably use the tournaments as an opportunity to go on a vacation.

The Legends Championships Tennis Tournament draws some of the top players from yesteryear to the courts at the Ritz-Carllton , Grand Cayman each year. It gives fans the opportunity to see the likes of Stefan Edberg and Martina Hingis in action again.  Last year this tournament generated more than $20,000 in cash and benefits through to the charities.

Now if such a tournament can take place in our country with our tourism centers in good care and smooth transportation services, what could possibly go wrong? It would definitely draw tennis fans. Now after all is said and done, I would like to use this medium to suggest that  reputable organizations in the country should partner  Ghana Tennis Federation  to help make it attractive and help take Tennis to new heights. Just to prove how realistic this suggestion is let’s take a look at Andy Murray as he is a living testimony of how a country can capitalize on a players glory. 

                                      MURRAY TASTES WIMBLEDON

Prior to 2013 Andy Murray had never tasted a Wimbledon one of Tennis prestigious events. After his emotional victory the country was inspired by his brilliant performance, and wanted more of that so more people picked up their racquets taking Scotland’s Tennis membership to 47,657. Their government saw the opportunity and invested £5.8 million in improving tennis facilities and widening access to the sport and not just that but they also put in place a four year investment stream to grow participation rates increase the sports accessibility and provide suitable environments to develop athletes to performance levels.

Now picture one of our own pulling that feet, it wouldn’t just force Ghana’s government to invest in the sport , it would virtually erupt the whole of Africa in the sport.

  

UPAC BASKETBALL WARM UP TOURNAMENT 2014

Believe it or not basketball has come a long way in the country and the UPAC warm up games was a testament to the fierceness and competitive tactility of basketball teams to be displayed  at the main UPAC games.
The warm up games was fruitful with four teams  consisting of the University Of Professional Studies (UPSA) , University Of Ghana (UG) , Accra Polytechnic and Central University (CUC) all turning up to compete in this event.
When TEAM UPSA was balloted to play Accra Polytechnic most pundits concluded a routing on TEAM UPSA. However TEAM UPSA gave A. Poly a scare when the first minutes of the first quarter saw UPSA lead A. poly 8-6 neither A.Poly nor UPSA dominated the first quarter. However prior to the game A.Poly leveled the playing field after two of their star players in the names of  Dodzie Baniba and Doggy were rested.

A.Poly got back in the game second quarter with some fine play and panache from Farhat and "Big time" who start to manifest themselves in the game , showing their class with so well worked drives, pull -up jumpers and a couple of three pointers. TEAM UPSA stuck to the two guard play which proved efficient on the offensive with Delvin of UPSA have a few drives down the paint to keep his team in the game. As the game progressed into the fourth quarter UPSA began using their shooting guard Kwarteng who made a couple of back to back three points. However A.Poly were quick to ensure they didn't lose their resounding lead with key player Farhat responding with his own. The game ended 50-42 in favor of A.Poly to ensure they booked a place in the final.

The UG - Central game was tipped to be a walk in the park for the host. UG came with their shooting guns scoring 8 straight points before Central had a response with Francis and Joel leading the charge. The game took a dip in tempo in the second quarter , but picked up again in the third and fourth quarter. UG led most parts of the game and at some point led as many as 10 points. Central however managed to claw back into game with just a half basket between them and leading the game. However the fourth quarter proved to be the decider with Centrals big man fouling out and legon capitalizing on that with some drives down the paint. The game ended on a low scoring note as compared to the UPSA -A.Poly game with UG winning 35-21.


Accra Polytechnic emerges victors

There was no doubt that the final was between reigning champions A.Poly  and host UG would be exciting and riveting. Before tip off time the court was crawling with fans from both institutions and even though UG were the hosts their fans were over shadowed by the upbeat chanting fans of A.Poly showing their enthusiasm. A.Poly start with fire and all guns blazing going a scoring spree from tip off, being very cautious not to underestimate UG like they did against UPSA. UG didn't concede defeat and came back strong with great possession attacking the rim. Kofi turned things around with a couple of threes and jumpers and so did their senoir forward chronic. Their point guard Joel played to the delight of the pundits and undermined the fact that he was a freshman as the game wore on UG started matching A.Poly boot for boot and at the end of the third quarter UG was leading by a half bucket. In the fourth quarter A.Poly came out strong cause they knew it was the deciding moment. UG took their feet of the pedal which cost them points after A.Poly took advantage by feeding Farhat and Romeo who used their height and speed to  make drives  into the UG paint. At the tail end UG woke up from their slumber and responded with back to back three pointers to mitigate the point gap  only for Farhat to respond with his own to maintain the point gap just as he did against UPSA. The game ended 60 -54 in favor of A.Poly.

Even though the tournament was dubbed as a warm up , a lot of positives were taking from the organizers of the competition. An example is the use of a time clock, buzzer beater and score board to help improve the game. Participants of the competition showed a lot of team effort co-operation and discipline from the players down to the fans. This definitely got pundits  and fans riled up and just shows what to expect from the main tournament.


Romeo of A-Poly was adjudged the tournament MVP. The 6-10 forward/centre recorded almost every stat during the tournament. He was dominant under the rim, cleaning the board on the offensive and defensive end, dunked it a couple of times and occasionally nailed a 3 pointer.
UG’s Joel was arguably the most promising player of the tournament. Despite being only 18 and fresh out of Presec Legon, he handled the ball with dexterity, made smart plays, had great court vision and drove into the paint of opposing teams without the fear of getting blocked.
