ROUND UP OF MATCHES WEEK 6

The week began with the Merseyside derby with Liverpool hosting  Everton the game showed a lot of intensity as it has in many years but had no goals to show for in the first half. In the second half , it wasn’t until the 74^th minute that  a neat free kick from the skipper  Gerrard beat Tim Howard to put the Reds in-front. Just on the stroke of full time when it seemed that Liverpool would run away with the  3 points Everton skipper Jagielka leveled things up in the 90^th+ 1 minute for the toffees to send Liverpool hearts crushing. This ended in a fashion which many Everton fans would cherish for many years to come.

In the next game Chelsea took on Aston Villa at the bridge. The opening goal came from Oscar in the 7^th minute but no goals were produced in the first half as Aston Villa weren’t able to penetrate the Chelsea defense. In the second half Costa scored in the 59^th minute to gives the Blues a two nil lead , Willian later made it three nil in the 79^th minute to put the game to bed.

Next Crystal Palace took on Leicester City , this game proved to be a very closed game as predicted by the pundits since all both teams were coming alive in the league. In the first half no goals were produced as both teams were very cautious. In the second half the game came alive with a goal from Campbell in the 51^st minute. Later Jedinak made it two nil to the host in the 54^th minute. Leicester tried to get back on many occasions but were to no avail.

Next of was Steve Bruce’s Hull City vs. Pellegrini’s Manchester City , it was an entertaining game with goals coming for both sides although many expected it to be a one sided game. In the first half Aguero scored the opener in the 7^th minute  Dzeko then made it  2 nil in the 11^th minute. Then the unexpected happened as Mangala to score an own goal to give the  host a life line. Hernandez then scored from the spot kick in the 32^nd minute to level things up for the host.  In the second half Dzeko scored in the 68^th minute to restore City’s lead. To put the game to bed as Champions should last week’s hero Lampard scored in the 87^th minute to bring joy to the Citizens once again.

Later Manchester United took on West Ham at Old Traford , United were coming back from a disappointing defeat and need to give the home fans something to rejoice about. In the first half Rooney opened the score in the 5^th minute to send the fans into a frenzy. Later Van Persie made it two in the 22^nd minute. United were still dominant but couldn’t get a goal ,  Sahko then pulled one back for the visitors in the 37^th minute as it stayed 2-1 in the first half. In the second half United were still dominant but couldn’t get any goal. Rooney however made a cynical tackle in the 59th minute and got sent off  , talk about leadership by example, it was the lowest point in the game for them.

Next Southampton took on Queens Park Rangers, the first half saw no goals produced but in the second half Bertand opened the score in the 54^th minute for the hosts. QPR later pulled parity in the 66^th minute through Austin but the equalizer was short lived as Pelle scored in the 68^th minute to restore the Saints lead.

Also Sunderland took on Swansea at the Stadium of light with the game ending in a goalless draw this meant Sunderland were  still without a win as they were handed their 5^th draw out of six games.  Sunderland controlled most of the game in the first half and looked more treating . Swansea on the other hand came alive in the second half managing to register their first shot on target of the game as per premier league  .

In Saturdays final game it was the North London derby which featured Arsenal playing host to Tottenham. In this derby’s past fixtures Arsenal have always come out tops but this time around something else went down in history. In the first half no goals were produced , the game came to life in the second half with a goal from Chadli in the 56^th minute after a mistake from Flamini. Arsenal then got their equalizer through Chamberlain in the 74^th minute as the game ended one all.

In the only game for Sunday West Bromich Albion took on Burnley  in a match which surprisingly was one sided. West Brom got the lead in the first half through Dawson in the 30^th minute , Berahino then made it two to the host in the 45^th minute. In the second half Berahino scored his brace in the 56^th minute to take the tally to three. The fourth came through Dorrans in the 90^th minute to put the game to rest .  It was quiet clear as through out the game Burnley failed to get a grip of the game as stated per  premier league.

 On Monday nights fixture Stoke City took on Newcastle as Alan Pardew was looking to grab his first win of the season. To Newcastle's disappointment that wasn't to be as Crouch got the only goal of the game in the  15th  minute in the first half from a Moses cross making it his 3rd assist of the season. This means the pressure on Pardew just went up the notch.

The program line up is strategically put in place to help develop students in sports and to prepare ahead of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) games.

ROUND UP OF MATCHES WEEK 5

The EPL returned after  the Champions League activities with only Liverpool getting a win amongst the English representatives. However week 5 began with a game between Queens Parker Rangers and Stoke City.

The first 45 produced two goals ,Diouf scoring in the 11^th minute to put the Pooters in front. The equalizer then came through Caulker in the 42^nd minute for Queens Park Rangers. In the second half Crouch scored in the 51^st minute to restore Stoke City’s lead. From that point Stoke were on the defensive and just when we thought they were bagging the three points , Kranjcar scored in the 88^th minute to deny Stoke City.

In the next game Swansea took on Southampton , Swansea recorded their first home defeat at the hands of the Saints surprisingly. The only goal of the game came in the 80^th minute through Wanyama who came on as a substitute for Ward Prowse.  A bit unlucky for the Swans played well but take nothing away from Southampton  who dominated most of the game as they showed by winning.

During the day Newcastle Untied took on Hull City , most of the Newcastle fans still showing their distaste for Alan Pardew and were more displeased when their club realized their 3^rd kit after going four games without a win.

The first half saw no goals , but  the game came alive in the second half and we saw four goals. Jelavic opened the dead lock with his goal 48^th minute , Diame then made it two for Hull City in the 68^th minute.

At this point Alan Pardew’s men were starring at defeat  but all was not lost as they managed to pull one back through Cisse in the 73^rd minute . Cisse later grabbed the equalizer in the 87^th minute to give Alan a breather. 

Burnley took on Sunderland  in a game that finished 0-0 , there were lots of attempts on goal for both sides but none were able to convert the to goals. Sunderland had better possession through out the spell of the game but had fewer attempts at goal.

After defeating Liverpool at anfield , Aston Villa hosted Arsenal at the villa park in the game were many expected Villa to hold their ground against Arsenal. The most entertaining part of the game was in the first half  , Ozil got the opening goal in the 32^nd minute at a sweet ball from Welbeck . Later Welbeck scored his goal through an Ozil assist. It was brilliant play on the path of Arsenal who later forced Cissokho to score an own goal to make it 0-3 in the 36^th minute. Surprisingly all of Arsenals goals just came in the space of four minutes. In the second half Wengers men took their feet of the pedal allowing Aston Villa to come out of their defensive shell but couldn’t manage to score. 

In the final game on Saturday West Ham took on Liverpool , Liverpool were coming back from a Champions league win which should have giving the Reds a moral booster but as it turned out the Reds were still lacking their edge from last season.

The first half saw three goals produced , the first goal coming from Reid  in the 2 minute  . It was later followed by  a goal from Sakho  in the 7^th  minute  meaning the Reds had conceded the goals in just a space of  five minutes. Liverpool then got one through Sterling in the 26^th minute. The second so Liverpool dominate most parts of the game but failed to make anything useful out of their possession.  In the 88^th minute West Ham put the game beyond Liverpools reach when a formal player Downing gave an inviting cross for Amalfitano to poke home for West Ham.

On Sunday Tottenham took on West Brom at the White Hart Lane , The first half saw no goals produced but in the second half the dead lock was broken through a header from  Morrison in the 74^th minute giving West Brom their first win of the campaign.

Later in the day Leicester City took on Manchester United in the game that saw 8 goals and Leicester City making a great comeback against the comeback kings themselves. In the first half Van persie opened the score chat with his in the 13^th minute. In the 16^th minute Di Maria made it two to the visitors. Just a minute after leading by two goals Ulloa pulled one back for Leicester in the  17^th minute.

At the start of the second half Herrera got his first  for United in the 57^th minute.  From this point everyone thought United had a comfortable lead to secure 3 points. To their dismay Nugent got scored from the spot kick in the 62^nd minute  to reduce the tally.  In the 64^th minute Cambiasso  leveled things up to mount real pressure on the visitors. Vardy then gave Leicester their deserved lead in the 79^th minute to increase Van Gaals wows.  Blackett was then set off in the 83^rd minute resulting in a penalty after a pointless  challenge on Vardy. Ulloa made it five for Leicester City securing a famous victory for his side.

In the final game of week 5 the Champions Manchester City took on Chelsea at the Etihad. The first half saw no goals produced with both sides tactically disciplined. In the second half the game came alive after Zabaleta was sent off in the 66^th minute giving Chelsea the upper hand with 11 men against Cities 10 men , after  the incident super substitute Schurrle scored in the 71^st minute. This mounted a lot of pressure of the Citizens as they couldn’t afford a defeat. Pellegrini  then made a change bringing on Chelsea and England legend Lampard , Milners cross saw Lampard connect with his trademark volley to level things in the 85^th minute. The legend couldn’t even give a smile as he was obviously filled with mixed reactions but none the less played like a professional.   

In the other game Everton took on Crystal Palace at the Goodison Park  , it was a game many expected Everton to win but things just weren’t going according to the script this week.

During the first half two goals were produced , Lukaku got the opener in the 9^th minute  and Crystal Palace got the equalizer from the spot kick through Jedinak in the 30^th minute. At the start of the second half Palace got their lead through Campbell  in the 54^th minute.  Later Bolasie made it three for the visitors in the 69^th minute.  Everton were heading towards defeat and didn’t look treating enough to get level. Baines got one back for the Toffees in the 83^rd minute but it was a little too late as Crystal Palace made away with the 3 points.
